Q&A
Q: When and how did you first hear of Kid Vantage?
A: “I first became aware of KidVantage in 2016—back when it was still known as Eastside Baby Corner. A group of colleagues and I spent a morning volunteering, sorting children’s clothing. Over the years, I continued to donate as my kiddo inevitably outgrew clothes, toys, and gear.”
Q: When did you start volunteering?
A: “What encouraged you to do so?After stepping away from the corporate world, I was looking for meaningful ways to give back and stay connected to my community. I had always admired the impact KidVantage had locally, so it felt like a natural fit. I started by signing up for a few shifts in August and September 2024 and quickly found myself hooked and became a core volunteer.”
Q: What do you enjoy most about volunteering with KidVantage?
A: “The people! I love the individuals I get to meet each week — fellow volunteers and generous community members dropping off donations. Everyone has a story, and I’m endlessly fascinated by them. I’m also continually inspired by the generosity of our community. Volunteering here gives me a weekly dose of faith in humanity.”
Q: What would you say to someone who is thinking about volunteering at KidVantage?
A: “Try it! I’m a huge fan of this organization, and I love that there are so many ways to contribute. Whether it’s sorting donations, assisting with events, or supporting behind the scenes, every hour of time makes a meaningful difference. KidVantage truly runs on the power of volunteers.”
Q: How would you describe KidVantage to someone who may not have heard of the organization before?
A: “I usually start by sharing that KidVantage supports over 18,000 kids in our local community — people are often surprised by that number. Living in an affluent area, it can be easy to overlook the real needs that exist. I also explain that KidVantage functions like the backbone organization, supplying essentials to well-known partners like schools, hospitals, and nonprofits such as Mary’s Place.”
Q: What is your favorite memory with KidVantage?
A: “I absolutely loved the recent Take a Chance for Kids charity auction. It was such a fun and uplifting evening, filled with energy and purpose, all in support of a mission I care deeply about.”
Q: What keeps you coming back to KidVantage?
A: “The people and the purpose. I genuinely enjoy working with the incredible team at KidVantage, and I believe deeply in the impact the organization is making. I also know that volunteers are essential to its success, and I’m grateful to be able to play a part in that.”
Q: What is one thing that you feel everyone should know about KidVantage?
A: “It’s hard to pick just one! But what I emphasize most is that every dollar, every donation, every hour of support goes directly toward helping real families right here in our community. The impact is tangible — and it changes lives.”
Q: Can you tell us about volunteering with KidVantage for Take a Chance for Kids? What was your role?
A: “I was thrilled to be involved with the Take a Chance for Kids event. I collaborated with the organizers on the décor for the event space. We reviewed what worked well last year and brainstormed new ideas to enhance the experience. From there, we developed a layout and explored creative touches — like adding a photo stop — to elevate the space.”
Q: How did you come up with the ideas for the Take a Chance for Kids decorations?
A: “The theme was “Great Gatsby Casino Night” with a turquoise and black color palette — a twist on the usual red-and-black casino look. I started by creating a vision board that balanced the event’s glamor with the reality of a limited budget. Once the concept was approved, I leaned into my skills as an ‘expert shopper’ and ‘novice crafter,’ asking myself: What can I thrift, DIY, or find affordably to bring this vision to life? It was a creative challenge and a lot of fun — and I’m really proud of the result.”
Thank you, Jody, for your dedication and support! Your contributions are felt not only by KidVantage, but hundreds of local families each and every week. We are so grateful to have you on our team!
